Something I’ve personally struggled with is making habits stick.  However, I’ve found that whenever I take baby steps, meaning approaching one habit at a time and focusing all of my attention on it, positive results are usually present.

It’s the constant routine that creates cultivation.

3 Easy Ways to Skyrocket Your Status



The old adage, “you are the company you keep” was never truer. Psychologists have whittled down human nature and personalities in five general traits, colloquially known as the Big Five. This collection includes: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.

While each individual inherently possesses his or her own set of personality traits, a recent study shows that members of groups can influence each other in terms of personal qualities and goals.

According to a study, “From the ephemeral to the enduring: How approach-oriented mindsets lead to greater status” by Adam D. Galinsky and Gavin J. Kilduff, groups were formed who evaluated one another in terms of how much value each provides to the group, and status was allocated accordingly.

Perception awards status. So as long as your perceived value is high to you, the group attaches higher status to you. Whether or not you actually deserve this delineation is not part of the criteria.

Galinsky and Kilduff tested status attainment through a method the call “approach-oriented states.” The first state is primed with promotion focus; the second state, primed with power, and the third, primed with happiness.

So how can you achieve higher status within your respective group?

1.  Enter your group beaming with positivity. One way to fast track positivity is to be grateful for the littlest things.  When you acknowledge and appreciate, there’s no room for fear, anger or insecurities.

2.  Exude power. You were born amazing and can make things happen.  If you believe this, others will believe it too.

3.  Be in your peak state.  Jump in place or dance to music for a few minutes. When you’re in your peak state, your whole body and mind works synergistically. This experiment boils down to “being in the right frame of mind at the right time.”

Researchers showed 2,375 people images of nine different women wearing six different shades of lipcolor. The participants then made spot evaluations of the women’s personalities, rating attributes like how creative, reliable, and professional they seemed.

How to look aesthetically pleasing

Have you ever wondered if there was a science behind what we view as fashionable? Style and fashion are subjective, but haven’t you wondered if there’s some sort of pattern to what the majority sees as aesthetically pleasing?


Psychologist Kurt Gray and a team of researchers hypothesized that there must be something that makes us view an outfit as stylish. To start, the researchers choose an essential element in any look—color. They showed the participants different pairs of color combinations and asking them to rank whether it was a good or bad combination, how they felt about it, and how fashionable it was.

The conclusion was that, across genders, participants hated combinations that clashed but they also hated “matchy-matchy” outfits. The best ranked outfits were the ones that fall into the middle, where you add just enough of your personality, but not enough that your outfit looks like a costume.  He brings up the “Goldilocks Principle” which is described as optimum psychological well-being–i.e., flow–is achieved when experiences balance simplicity and complexity.

“These results are consistent with both centuries of philosophical thought and more recent psychological studies on the importance of “the middle way.” The Goldilocks principle may also explain aesthetic judgments beyond fashion, reflecting a basic principle of human preference that seeks to balance simplicity and complexity, order and disorder. Indeed, people prefer music that balances melodic simplicity and complexity. This quantitative analysis of fashion is only a first step in empirical aesthetics, but it highlights the utility of bringing science to art; psychological science can help explain the important but often invisible judgments of daily life.”

So what does this mean for you?

Next time you’re struggling to put a look together, don’t be afraid to be brave and mix patterns and colors together. The simplest way is to make sure colors contrast, but don’t clash.  Take a look at the color wheel and keep complimentary colors in mind.

When you mix patters, mix medium or large print with a smaller one or with plaid or stripes in a complimentary color so its not as overwhelming.

A case study for embracing your style

I find that the more you embrace your personal style, your quirks, your taste, and all your little personalities, the more successful you become.

This leads me to share with you a perfect case study of doing such. My awesome, beautiful,  talented, and motivational long-time friend Jesse sent me a video this morning that she made and I’d like to share with you (with her blessing).

When Jesse and I lived together during college, we used to get up early and workout together, and then we would watch youtube videos and teach each other how to do dances, as if we were the backup dancers to rap groups. Needless to say, she’s phenomenal at dancing.

Additionally, she’s super talented with editing and putting together creative “diddy’s” on video.  She combines her motivational quality, and her energetic and humorous personality with her talents.  The result is on another level.

When I received the video below via text message this morning, I had to push aside my Style Habits blog game plan to immediately share with you her awesomeness.  Her adorable niece makes a guest appearance.

Jesse is a prime example how we create, design and STYLE the life we live.  How, when we accept our unique talents and gifts, we bring light and happiness to others.  You were born Amazing!  Beautiful!  And Extraordinary!  Take your joys and run with them.  Like Jesse does.

Posture and Power

It’s important that you feel powerful.  Being aware of the way you carry yourself is a simple way to unlock your potential to being more confident.

Harvard Psychologist Amy Cuddy has completed a study on the way our posture affects us.

Cuddy found that “Alpha Pose” has a direct influence on our biochemistry: testosterone (confidence) increases while cortisol (stress) decreases, leading to a higher sense of dominance and authority.

The opposite of this is also true, where standing or sitting in more crouched position can make you feel less powerful.

Take notice of the way that you’re holding yourself at moments when you feel more powerful and in control versus the way your posture is when you’re feeling more anxious or reserved.

One Hot Predictor of Success

Everyone has his or her own personal definition of success and what it means to be successful. Even with different variables, there are certain behaviors that are common in successful people no matter what arena success is being defined. So what is the one behavior that drives success in any given environment?


Success is not easy, and the people who are the most adapt at achieving know this. For 35 years,  Paul G. Stoltz has been researching success and has come to the conclusion that the difference between success and failure is grit, or determination. In one of his studies he asked executives, “If you were hiring someone and had to choose between a person with perfect skills but weak grit and a person with exceptional grit but missing some skills, which would you pick?” The majority picked the second option and even went so far as to say that they would trade more than eight employees for just one person who posed grit.

What is Grit?

According to Stoltz grit involves growth, resilience, instinct, and tenacity.  Grit is more of an innate behavior, and while you can develop the qualities that define grit, it’s something that’s harder to teach.

A second study on grit and its affects on success looked at spelling bee competitors. This study, “Deliberate Practice Spells Success: Why Grittier Competitors Triumph at the National Spelling Bee” was led by a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, Angela Duckworth, who I’ve been following for a number of years. The focus was on what set of traits and behavioral aspects allowed the kids to practice deliberately. Deliberate practice was defined as studying and memorizing words while they were alone, and this form was found to be the most effective. This method was also ranked as the least enjoyable way to study; however, as the spellers became more experienced they also increased the time they spent studying deliberately. After Duckworth analyzed the data, she came to the conclusion that possessing the characteristic of grit was the important factor.

Grit’s about following through on your commitments.

People with grit, unsurprisingly, tend to be more single-minded when it comes to their goals. So they’re more likely to stick with the task even when it gets difficult, and to see it through until its finished, which naturally leads to a higher rate of success.

So what does grit have to do with your presence?

Well, what have you committed to?  How do you want to show up in the world?  What do you want to look like?  How do you want to behave? Do you invest your time into creating a commanding presence? When life gets difficult, do you allow events to sway your reaction and behaviors? Or do you remember your commitments and priorities, and make life react to you? It’s a switch in mindset that I believe is a valuable component towards honing your gritty skill set, and helping you achieve the success you’ve dreamed.
